U.S. Senator; Led Trump Impeachment Investigation
U.S. Senator (D-CA); Former House Intelligence Committee Chair
Adam Bennett Schiff is a U.S. Senator from California; elected in 2024 after serving in the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2024. He is best known for his role as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee; where he led the first impeachment investigation of Donald Trump over the Ukraine extortion scandal. Schiff presented the case that Trump had withheld congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine to pressure President Zelensky into announcing an investigation of Joe Biden's son Hunter; effectively attempting to use U.S. foreign policy as a personal political weapon. Before entering politics; Schiff was a federal prosecutor who convicted former FBI agent Richard Miller; the first FBI agent ever convicted of espionage; for passing classified documents to the Soviet Union. In the House; Schiff became one of Trump's primary targets; with Trump calling him "Shifty Schiff" and "pencil neck." In June 2023; House Republicans voted to censure Schiff on largely party-line votes; alleging he had misled the public about evidence of Trump-Russia collusion. Schiff was deeply involved in the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and consistently stated that there was evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia beyond what was publicly known. He was also a leading advocate for the second Trump impeachment over the January 6 insurrection. His critics argue he exaggerated the evidence of Russian collusion; while supporters credit him with exposing Trump's abuse of power.
