Former Qatar Airways CEO; Controversial Aviation Executive; Sexist Remarks
Chief Executive Officer; Qatar Airways Group (1997-2023); Secretary-General; Qatar National Tourism Council
Akbar Al Baker served as CEO of Qatar Airways for 27 years from 1997 to 2023; transforming it from a small regional carrier into one of the world's largest and most awarded airlines while becoming one of the most controversial figures in global aviation. Born in Doha; Qatar; Al Baker oversaw Qatar Airways' rapid expansion to over 150 destinations; its joining of the Oneworld alliance; and the construction of Hamad International Airport. However; his tenure was marked by repeated controversies. Al Baker was internationally condemned for sexist remarks at the 2018 IATA Annual General Meeting in Sydney; where he stated that his airline "of course" had to be run by a man because "it is a very challenging position." He had previously said women were suited only to certain roles in aviation. He was known for his volcanic temper and public verbal attacks on competitors; regulatory officials; and even his own staff. He repeatedly threatened to pull Qatar Airways out of the Oneworld alliance; publicly criticized partner airlines; and engaged in bitter feuds with rival Gulf carriers Emirates and Etihad. Qatar Airways received massive state subsidies from the Qatari government; with U.S.; European; and Australian carriers accusing the airline of receiving over $25 billion in unfair government support; distorting global aviation markets. Al Baker denied the subsidy allegations. During the 2017-2021 Saudi-led blockade of Qatar; Al Baker navigated the airline through the loss of routes to Saudi Arabia; the UAE; Bahrain; and Egypt. Qatar Airways has also faced scrutiny for labor practices; with workers in Qatar operating under the kafala sponsorship system that rights organizations compared to modern slavery. Al Baker was abruptly removed as CEO in November 2023 by the Qatari Emir; reportedly over disagreements about the airline's direction.
