CIA Director (1953-1961)
Longest-serving CIA Director who authorized MKUltra, orchestrated coups, and later served on Warren Commission
Allen Welsh Dulles served as CIA Director from 1953-1961, the longest-serving director in agency history. He authorized MKUltra mind control experiments, orchestrated coups in Iran (1953) and Guatemala (1954), launched the Bay of Pigs invasion, initiated Operation Mockingbird to control media, and expanded CIA covert operations globally. He was fired by JFK after Bay of Pigs but later served on the Warren Commission investigating Kennedy's assassination; an extraordinary conflict of interest.
MKULTRA AUTHORIZATION: Dulles personally authorized the MKUltra program in 1953, approving experiments that drugged unwitting American citizens with LSD and other substances, causing permanent psychological damage and deaths.
IRAN COUP (1953): Orchestrated Operation Ajax, overthrowing democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh to protect British and American oil interests. Installed the Shah, whose brutal rule led to the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
GUATEMALA COUP (1954): Directed Operation PBSuccess, overthrowing democratically elected President Jacobo ÃÂrbenz to protect United Fruit Company interests. The coup triggered decades of military dictatorship and genocide.
OPERATION MOCKINGBIRD: Expanded CIA infiltration of American media. Personally cultivated relationships with journalists and publishers. By the 1970s, the CIA influenced over 400 journalists.
BAY OF PIGS: Assured President Kennedy the invasion would succeed. When it failed disastrously, Kennedy fired him, reportedly saying he wanted to"splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces."
WARREN COMMISSION: Despite being fired by JFK and having potential motive for the assassination, Dulles was appointed to investigate Kennedy's murder. Critics argue he steered the investigation away from intelligence connections.
UNITED FRUIT CONNECTIONS: Both Allen and his brother John Foster Dulles had extensive ties to United Fruit Company, which directly benefited from the Guatemala coup. This represented massive conflicts of interest.
LEGACY OF COVERT ACTION: Dulles established the template for CIA covert operations that continues today; overthrowing governments, manipulating media, conducting experiments on citizens, and operating without accountability.
