Republican Congressman; Freedom Caucus Chairman; January 6th Subpoena Target
U.S. Representative (AZ-5); Former Arizona State Senate President; Freedom Caucus Chair
Andrew Steven Biggs is a Republican U.S. Representative from Arizona's 5th congressional district; serving since 2017. Before entering federal politics; he served in the Arizona State Senate from 2003 to 2017; including as State Senate President from 2013 to 2017; after famously winning a $10 million Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes in 1993 that helped fund his political career. Biggs became chairman of the House Freedom Caucus in 2020 and is one of the most conservative members of Congress. He was deeply involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results; objecting to certification of electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania on January 6; 2021. Stop the Steal organizer Ali Alexander publicly stated in a since-deleted video that Biggs; along with Representatives Paul Gosar and Mo Brooks; helped him organize the January 6 rally at the Ellipse. The January 6th Select Committee subpoenaed Biggs in May 2022; citing evidence he had communicated with rally organizers and White House officials about plans to challenge the election on January 6. Biggs refused to comply with the subpoena. Text messages revealed he had communicated with Mark Meadows about alternate electors and challenging certification. He also contacted Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers pressuring him to decertify the state's election results. Biggs has been a vocal opponent of immigration; climate legislation; and government spending; and has pushed for the impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the defunding of the FBI.
