Republican Congresswoman; Identity and Background Fabrication Allegations
U.S. Representative (FL-13); Republican; MAGA-Aligned; Controversial Background Claims
Anna Paulina Luna (born Anna Paulina Mayerhofer) is a Republican U.S. Representative from Florida's 13th congressional district; elected in 2022. She has become one of the most controversial members of Congress due to extensive reporting on fabrications and inconsistencies in her personal biography. A Washington Post investigation found that Luna had changed her name; her racial and ethnic identity claims; and key details of her life story multiple times. She has variously identified as Hispanic; Middle Eastern; white; and Eastern European depending on context. Her father; whose last name is Mayerhofer; is of Austrian and German descent; not Hispanic as she has implied. Former friends and associates told the Post that Luna fabricated or exaggerated claims about growing up in poverty; witnessing a home invasion as a child; and her father's criminal history. She also claimed to practice Judaism despite no documented connection to Jewish heritage. Luna obtained a restraining order in 2021 against a former associate; William Braddock; claiming he was planning to have her killed; but a subsequent investigation by conservative outlets raised questions about the evidence. In Congress; Luna has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump; pushed to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in inherent contempt; and introduced articles of impeachment against several Biden administration officials. She has also made false claims about her military service record in the Air Force; inflating her role and responsibilities. Her financial disclosures have also raised questions; with significant inconsistencies between her reported assets and her claimed background of poverty.
