Overview

Anthony Stephen Fauci is an American immunologist who served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for 38 years from 1984 to 2022; advising seven presidents on infectious disease issues from HIV/AIDS to COVID-19. He became the face of the U.S. pandemic response in 2020; initially praised for his calm scientific demeanor but increasingly attacked by Trump and the political right for supporting lockdowns; mask mandates; and vaccine requirements. Fauci's NIAID funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology through EcoHealth Alliance grants; a fact he initially appeared to deny before Congress; leading to accusations of perjury from Senator Rand Paul. The NIH later acknowledged that EcoHealth Alliance had conducted limited experiments that could be categorized as gain-of-function research; though Fauci maintained the research did not meet the technical definition. Under his tenure; NIAID also funded controversial beagle experiments where dogs were subjected to sandfly bites and other painful procedures; drawing bipartisan outrage. His emails released under FOIA revealed he was privately warned by scientists that COVID-19 may have been engineered; though he publicly dismissed the lab-leak hypothesis. He received over $350;000 in royalties from pharmaceutical companies during his tenure; raising conflict of interest concerns. After leaving government; he was subpoenaed by House Republicans investigating COVID origins and admitted during testimony that social distancing guidelines were "not based on data."
