White House Communications Director (11 Days); SkyBridge Capital Founder
Financier; Political Figure; Former White House Communications Director
Anthony Scaramucci is an American financier and political figure who served as White House Communications Director for just 11 days in July 2017; making his tenure one of the shortest in American political history. A Harvard Law School graduate; Scaramucci founded SkyBridge Capital in 2005; a fund of hedge funds firm that managed approximately $12.3 billion in assets at its peak. He was a bundler and fundraiser for multiple presidential campaigns; initially supporting Barack Obama in 2008 before shifting to Mitt Romney in 2012 and eventually becoming a prominent Trump supporter and fundraiser in 2016. Scaramucci was appointed White House Communications Director on July 21; 2017; but was removed on July 31 after just 11 days following an obscenity-laden phone call with New Yorker reporter Ryan Lizza in which he attacked then-White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus (calling him a "paranoid schizophrenic") and chief strategist Steve Bannon in vulgar terms. His wife filed for divorce days after his appointment; reportedly due to his political activities. Scaramucci had previously been investigated by the SEC regarding SkyBridge Capital's investment in the Skybridge Opportunity Zone Fund; though no charges resulted. In January 2017; he agreed to sell SkyBridge to a Chinese conglomerate; HNA Group; a deal that was later abandoned under regulatory scrutiny over potential national security concerns. He later became one of Trump's most vocal critics; publicly breaking with the president in August 2019 and calling him "unstable" and unfit for office.
