Anthony David Weiner is a former Democratic U.S. Representative from New York who served from 1999 to 2011 before resigning in disgrace after a sexting scandal. Weiner accidentally posted a sexually explicit photograph intended as a private message on his public Twitter account in May 2011; initially claimed he was hacked; then admitted to sending explicit images and messages to multiple women. He resigned from Congress in June 2011. In 2013; Weiner attempted a political comeback by running for New York City mayor and briefly led in polls before a second sexting scandal erupted under the alias "Carlos Danger"; he finished last in the Democratic primary. In 2016; a third scandal emerged when it was revealed Weiner had sent sexually explicit messages to a 15-year-old girl. This investigation had an extraordinary impact on the 2016 presidential election; the FBI's seizure of Weiner's laptop (which he shared with then-wife Huma Abedin; a top Hillary Clinton aide) revealed thousands of Clinton-related emails; prompting FBI Director James Comey to send his infamous October 28; 2016 letter to Congress reopening the Clinton email investigation just 11 days before the election. Many analysts believe the Comey letter was decisive in Clinton's defeat. Weiner pleaded guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor in May 2017 and was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. He registered as a sex offender upon release.
