Bashar al-Assad served as President of Syria from 2000 until his overthrow in December 2024. He inherited power from his father Hafez al-Assad and presided over the brutal suppression of the 2011 Arab Spring protests that evolved into the Syrian Civil War. His regime killed an estimated 500,000+ people, displaced 13 million, and used chemical weapons against civilians including the 2013 Ghouta attack killing 1,400+ and 2017 Khan Shaykhun attack. Assad received military backing from Russia and Iran throughout the conflict. He fled to Russia following rebel advances in December 2024.
