U.S. Senator from Vermont
Independent senator who has led the legislative fight for Medicare for All, prescription drug price negotiation, and healthcare affordability reform
Bernard Sanders (born 1941) is an American politician serving as the senior U.S. Senator from Vermont since 2007. The longest-serving independent member of Congress in American history, Sanders has been the most prominent legislative advocate for universal healthcare, drug price reform, and accountability for pharmaceutical industry profiteering. As chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, Sanders held landmark hearings dragging pharmaceutical CEOs before Congress to explain drug pricing, including Novo Nordisk CEO over insulin pricing and Moderna CEO over COVID-19 vaccine prices. He led the fight for the Inflation Reduction Act provisions allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices for the first time in history, partially undoing the damage of the 2003 Medicare Part D non-negotiation clause. Sanders has introduced multiple versions of the Medicare for All Act, legislation to allow prescription drug importation from Canada, and has been the most consistent Senate voice against the pharmaceutical industry lobbying apparatus. His 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns made healthcare reform and drug pricing central national issues.
