NSA Whistleblower
Whistleblower who revealed extent of NSA mass surveillance programs
Edward Snowden is a former NSA contractor who in 2013 revealed the extent of NSA mass surveillance programs, including the collection of data on virtually all American phone calls and internet activity. His disclosures exposed unconstitutional surveillance, sparked global debate about privacy, and proved that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper had lied to Congress. Snowden faces Espionage Act charges and remains in exile in Russia.
THE DISCLOSURES: In June 2013, Snowden provided journalists with thousands of classified documents revealing NSA programs including PRISM (collecting data from tech companies), bulk phone metadata collection, and XKeyscore (searching internet activity).
CONSTITUTIONAL VIOLATIONS: The programs Snowden exposed were later ruled unconstitutional by federal courts. The bulk phone metadata program was found to exceed the authority Congress had granted.
EXPOSING CLAPPER'S LIE: Snowden's revelations proved that DNI James Clapper had lied to Congress when he denied the NSA collected data on millions of Americans.
METHODOLOGY: Snowden provided documents to journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Barton Gellman. They published stories with appropriate redactions, never just dumping raw intelligence.
PUBLIC INTEREST: Snowden revealed information Americans needed to know about their own government spying on them. Courts, Congress, and the public had been misled about surveillance scope.
PERSECUTION: Snowden faces charges under the Espionage Act, which does not allow a public interest defense. If returned to the U.S., he could not argue his disclosures served democracy.
EXILE: Snowden was stranded in Russia when the U.S. revoked his passport during transit. He has lived there since 2013 and obtained Russian citizenship in 2022.
TWO-TIERED JUSTICE: Snowden faces prosecution while Clapper, who lied to Congress, faced no consequences. This illustrates how whistleblowers are persecuted while officials enjoy impunity.
