Murder Victim / Symbol of Police Brutality
Victim of police murder whose death sparked worldwide protests for racial justice and the largest social movement in American history
George Perry Floyd Jr. was a 46-year-old Black man murdered by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020. Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds outside Cup Foods at 38th and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis while Floyd pleaded "I can't breathe" and called for his deceased mother. Three other officers, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane, assisted in the restraint or blocked bystanders from intervening. Floyd's death, recorded by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier, sparked the largest protests in U.S. history (15 to 26 million participants) and a global reckoning with police violence against Black people. All four officers were convicted in state and federal courts. The City of Minneapolis paid a record $27 million wrongful death settlement to his family.
THE INCIDENT: On May 25, 2020, Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill at Cup Foods in Minneapolis. Officers Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng responded. Lane pointed his gun at Floyd before handcuffing him. When officers attempted to place Floyd in a squad car, a struggle ensued. Senior officer Derek Chauvin arrived and forced Floyd face-down on the pavement, kneeling on his neck. Kueng knelt on his back. Lane held his legs. Tou Thao blocked bystanders. Floyd was restrained for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.
HIS FINAL WORDS: Floyd said "I can't breathe" more than 20 times. He called out "Mama" and said "Tell my kids I love them." He went silent and motionless approximately four minutes before Chauvin finally removed his knee. Emergency medical services found no pulse when they arrived. He was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by cardiopulmonary arrest during law enforcement subdual and restraint.
BYSTANDER COURAGE: 17-year-old Darnella Frazier recorded the murder on her phone for over 10 minutes despite officer threats. Her video, watched billions of times worldwide, proved crucial to the conviction and directly contradicted the initial MPD press release that described Floyd's death as a "medical incident." Frazier received a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation in 2021 and the PEN/Benenson Courage Award.
WHO HE WAS: Floyd was born on October 14, 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and grew up in Houston's Third Ward, one of the city's historically Black neighborhoods. He was a father of five, a former high school football and basketball star, and a community figure known as "Big Floyd." Friends described him as gentle and generous. He moved to Minneapolis in 2014 seeking a fresh start and worked as a truck driver and bouncer.
GLOBAL PROTESTS: Floyd's murder sparked protests in all 50 states and over 2,000 cities in more than 60 countries within two weeks. An estimated 15 to 26 million Americans participated between May 26 and August 22, 2020, the largest social movement in American history. The protests led to the removal of Confederate monuments, corporate racial equity pledges exceeding $50 billion, and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passing the House twice.
THE $27 MILLION SETTLEMENT: On March 12, 2021, the City of Minneapolis unanimously approved a $27 million wrongful death settlement with Floyd's family, the largest pre-trial settlement in a civil rights wrongful death case in U.S. history at the time. Attorney Ben Crump represented the family. The settlement included $500,000 designated for the community around 38th and Chicago Avenue.
INITIAL POLICE COVER-UP: MPD's original press release on May 25, 2020, titled "Man Dies After Medical Incident During Police Interaction," made no mention of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck. Without Frazier's video, this sanitized narrative would have been the official record. The cover-up was emblematic of MPD's documented pattern of shielding officers from accountability.
GEORGE FLOYD SQUARE: The intersection of 38th and Chicago became known as George Floyd Square, an occupied protest site and memorial lasting over two years. Protesters maintained 24 demands for the city. Thousands of visitors came from around the world. The city designated the section of Chicago Avenue as George Perry Floyd Jr. Place.
GEORGE FLOYD JUSTICE IN POLICING ACT: Proposed federal legislation named after Floyd would ban chokeholds, end qualified immunity, create a national police misconduct registry, and mandate data collection on use of force. It passed the House twice (2020 and 2021) but failed to overcome a Senate filibuster. No federal police reform was enacted.
CONTINUING INJUSTICE: Despite Floyd's death and the unprecedented protests it sparked, police continue killing approximately 1,100 Americans annually. Qualified immunity remains intact. Most major city police budgets increased by 2023. At least 36 states introduced laws restricting protest rights. The structural conditions that enabled Floyd's murder remain largely unchanged.
