Overview
George Anthony Devolder Santos served as a U.S. Representative from New York from January to December 2023, when he became only the sixth member in history to be expelled from Congress. Santos fabricated virtually every aspect of his public biography: he claimed to have degrees from Baruch College and NYU (he attended neither), claimed to have worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs (he worked at neither), claimed his grandparents fled the Holocaust (they did not), claimed to be Jewish (he is Catholic), and claimed his mother died in the 9/11 attacks (she was in Brazil). A 23-count federal indictment charged Santos with wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds (unemployment benefits), and making false statements to Congress. He stole money from donors including funds meant for a disabled veteran's dying service dog. Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August 2024.
