Convicted Sex Trafficker; NXIVM Cult Leader
Founded NXIVM cult; convicted of sex trafficking, forced labor, and racketeering; sentenced to 120 years
Keith Alan Raniere founded NXIVM (pronounced "Nexium"); a purported self-improvement organization based in Albany, New York that federal prosecutors proved was a sex trafficking cult. Within NXIVM; Raniere created a secret inner circle called DOS (Dominus Obsequious Sororium; Latin for "Master Over the Slave Women") in which women were recruited as "slaves" to a hierarchy of "masters"; branded with Raniere's initials using a cauterizing pen; required to provide compromising "collateral" (nude photos, damaging confessions) to prevent them from leaving; and coerced into sexual acts with Raniere. Victims were placed on 500-calorie diets to maintain the thin body type Raniere preferred. Raniere was found guilty on all counts in June 2019 including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, forced labor conspiracy, wire fraud, and sex trafficking conspiracy. He was sentenced to 120 years in federal prison in October 2020. NXIVM attracted wealthy and powerful members including Seagram heiress Clare Bronfman; who was sentenced to 81 months for her role; and actress Allison Mack; who received 3 years for recruiting women into DOS.
