Lanny Jay Davis is an American attorney; lobbyist; and political operative best known for serving as special counsel to President Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal and impeachment proceedings. After leaving the White House; Davis built a lucrative practice as a crisis management lawyer and lobbyist; representing a controversial roster of clients that included authoritarian governments and corporations facing public relations crises. Davis registered as a foreign agent for the Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo; who was later charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court for his role in post-election violence that killed approximately 3;000 people. He also represented Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang Nguema; one of Africa's longest-ruling dictators; whose regime has been extensively documented for human rights abuses; corruption; and political repression. Davis lobbied for the Honduras business community in the aftermath of the 2009 coup that overthrew democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya; drawing criticism from human rights organizations. He served as attorney and spokesperson for Michael Cohen during Cohen's break with Donald Trump in 2018. Davis's career exemplifies the revolving door between government service; lobbying; and crisis PR; using political connections and media relationships developed during government service to serve paying clients regardless of their human rights records.
