Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission
Authorized the Castle Bravo nuclear test; suppressed radiation health data from Marshall Islanders; orchestrated the security clearance revocation of J. Robert Oppenheimer
Lewis Lichtenstein Strauss served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) from 1953 to 1958. He authorized the Castle Bravo nuclear weapons test on March 1; 1954; at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The test produced a yield of 15 megatons; 2.5 times larger than expected; making it the largest U.S. nuclear detonation and creating massive radioactive fallout that contaminated the inhabited atolls of Rongelap and Utirik. The 236 residents of Rongelap were not evacuated until 3 days after the test despite the AEC's knowledge of the fallout pattern; they experienced acute radiation sickness; including nausea; vomiting; and skin burns. Over subsequent decades; the exposed populations suffered dramatically elevated rates of thyroid cancer; leukemia; birth defects; and stillbirths. Strauss suppressed and minimized the health effects data; publicly claiming Rongelap residents were "well and happy" while internal AEC documents acknowledged severe contamination. Project 4.1; a classified medical study; used the irradiated Marshallese as human subjects to study the effects of nuclear fallout on human beings. Strauss also orchestrated the security clearance revocation of J. Robert Oppenheimer; the father of the atomic bomb; who had opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb. The Oppenheimer hearing in 1954; widely seen as a politically motivated persecution; destroyed Oppenheimer's career. Oppenheimer was posthumously rehabilitated in 2022 when the DOE vacated the 1954 decision.
