Former U.S. Representative; Texas
Republican congressman who promoted election conspiracy theories; filed lawsuit to pressure Mike Pence to overturn the 2020 election; and spread disinformation about January 6
Louie Buller Gohmert Jr. served as a Republican U.S. Representative from Texas's 1st Congressional District from 2005 to 2023. Gohmert was one of Congress's most vocal promoters of conspiracy theories and disinformation. In December 2020; Gohmert filed a federal lawsuit attempting to compel Vice President Mike Pence to reject certified electoral votes during the January 6 joint session of Congress; a legal theory rejected by the courts and nearly all constitutional scholars. On January 6; 2021; Gohmert voted to object to the certification of electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania even after the Capitol breach. He promoted the conspiracy theory that the January 6 insurrection was actually a "false flag" operation conducted by the FBI or Antifa disguised as Trump supporters; despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary including testimony from Trump's own appointees. Gohmert also promoted debunked claims about election fraud; including conspiracy theories about Dominion Voting Systems. He spread COVID-19 misinformation; suggesting that wearing masks might actually cause infections. He tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2020 after refusing to wear a mask in the Capitol. Earlier in his career; Gohmert was known for inflammatory statements on the House floor; including claiming that "terror babies" were being born in the U.S. by foreign terrorist operatives and making unfounded suggestions connecting the Muslim Brotherhood to the Obama administration. He retired in 2022 to unsuccessfully run for Texas Attorney General.
