36th President of the United States
President who escalated Vietnam War based on fabricated Gulf of Tonkin incident
Lyndon B. Johnson served as President from 1963-1969, escalating the Vietnam War based on the fabricated Gulf of Tonkin incident. He knew the August 4, 1964"attack"that justified the Tonkin Gulf Resolution never occurred but used it to expand the war anyway. The resulting conflict killed 58,000 Americans and 2-3 million Vietnamese. Johnson's domestic achievements cannot erase his responsibility for a catastrophic war built on lies.
TONKIN DECEPTION: Johnson used the August 4, 1964"attack"(which never happened) to push through the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution giving him virtually unlimited war powers. He privately expressed doubts about the attack while publicly claiming certainty.
ESCALATION: Johnson escalated from 16,000 advisors to over 500,000 troops. He authorized massive bombing campaigns including Rolling Thunder. He repeatedly misled the public about the war's progress.
THE CREDIBILITY GAP: The difference between official claims and reality created the"credibility gap."Americans increasingly distrusted government statements about Vietnam.
DRAFT AND CASUALTIES: Under Johnson, over 30,000 Americans died in Vietnam. Hundreds of thousands more were wounded. The draft disproportionately affected poor and minority communities.
PENTAGON PAPERS: The Pentagon Papers, leaked in 1971, revealed systematic government deception about Vietnam under Johnson and his predecessors. Johnson's administration had known the war was likely unwinnable.
DOMESTIC ACHIEVEMENTS: Johnson signed landmark civil rights and social welfare legislation including the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, Medicare, and Medicaid. These achievements are marred by his war.
WITHDRAWAL: Facing antiwar opposition and a credibility collapse, Johnson announced in March 1968 he would not seek re-election. He had lost the country's trust.
LEGACY: Johnson's legacy is forever divided between transformative domestic policy and a catastrophic war built on deception that killed millions and damaged American democracy.
