Former Enron Head of Investor Relations who cooperated with prosecutors and testified against Skilling and Lay
Former Head of Investor Relations, Enron Corporation
Mark Koenig served as Enron Corporation's Head of Investor Relations, the executive responsible for communicating the company's financial performance and outlook to Wall Street analysts and institutional investors. In this role, Koenig was directly involved in presenting Enron's financials to the market, financials that were later revealed to be systematically manipulated through off-balance-sheet partnerships and mark-to-market accounting fraud. Koenig cooperated with federal prosecutors and became one of the government's key witnesses in the landmark trial of Enron Chairman Kenneth Lay and CEO Jeffrey Skilling. He was one of eight former Enron executives who testified for the prosecution, providing insider accounts of how Enron's leadership misrepresented the company's true financial condition to investors. His testimony was particularly valuable because of his direct role as the conduit between Enron's executive suite and Wall Street. In exchange for his cooperation, Koenig received a relatively lenient sentence of 18 months in federal prison, significantly less than the sentences imposed on non-cooperating defendants like Skilling (24 years, later reduced to 14) and Fastow (6 years before cooperation credit).
