Media Mogul and Television Host
Media Icon; Billionaire; Cultural Influence
Oprah Gail Winfrey is a media executive; television host; actress; and philanthropist who became the first Black female billionaire and one of the most influential people in American media history. Her talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" ran for 25 seasons (1986-2011) and was the highest-rated daytime television program. In the context of power structure documentation; Winfrey's name appears in Jeffrey Epstein's contact book; though there is no evidence she was involved in any criminal activity. She was photographed with Epstein associate Harvey Weinstein at various industry events before his sexual assault convictions. Winfrey's cultural influence is enormous; her endorsement of books; products; and politicians (notably Barack Obama in 2008) had measurable impacts on sales and polling numbers (the "Oprah Effect"). She founded the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN); O Magazine; and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. The South Africa school faced scandal in 2007 when a dormitory matron was charged with sexually abusing students. Winfrey has been criticized for promoting pseudoscience on her show; including giving platforms to anti-vaccine advocates; Dr. Oz (later faced Federal Trade Commission scrutiny for fraudulent medical claims); and Dr. Phil. Her promotion of "The Secret" (law of attraction) was criticized as harmful magical thinking that blamed victims for their circumstances.
