Nicaraguan Drug Trafficker and DEA Informant
CIA-Contra Drug Pipeline; Supplied Cocaine to LA; DEA Informant
Oscar Danilo Blandón Reyes was a Nicaraguan drug trafficker who helped funnel tons of Colombian cocaine into Los Angeles to finance the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contra rebels in the 1980s. Working with drug lord Norwin Meneses; Blandón supplied cocaine to "Freeway" Ricky Ross; who built a crack cocaine empire that devastated South Central Los Angeles and other Black communities. Journalist Gary Webb documented this pipeline in his 1996 San Jose Mercury News series "Dark Alliance;" revealing that the CIA was aware of and protected drug trafficking by its Contra allies. Blandón testified that he and Meneses smuggled cocaine into the U.S. specifically to raise money for the Contras; with the knowledge of Contra leadership. Despite being a major drug trafficker responsible for importing hundreds of kilograms of cocaine; Blandón was given an extraordinarily lenient deal: he served only 28 months in prison; was released; and became a paid DEA informant earning over $166;000. His light treatment contrasted starkly with the mandatory minimum sentences imposed on low-level crack dealers in the communities his cocaine had devastated. The CIA Inspector General's 1998 report confirmed the agency was aware of Contra drug trafficking but chose not to intervene to protect its covert operations.
