Former U.S. Senator (D-NJ)
Indicted and convicted sitting U.S. senator who served as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee while secretly acting as a foreign agent for Egypt and Qatar, accepting hundreds of thousands in gold bars, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz
Robert Menendez served as a U.S. Senator from New Jersey from 2006 to 2024 and as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee - one of the most powerful positions in American foreign policy. In September 2023, he was indicted on federal charges of bribery, acting as a foreign agent, obstruction of justice, and extortion. Prosecutors alleged that Menendez and his wife Nadine accepted over $480,000 in gold bars, $70,000+ in cash (found stuffed in jacket pockets and envelopes), a Mercedes-Benz convertible, and other items of value from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for using his official power to benefit the government of Egypt, interfere with federal criminal investigations, and secure monopoly rights for a halal meat certification company. A search of Menendez's home found gold bars traceable to a specific serial number registered to one of the co-defendants. Menendez was convicted on all 16 counts in July 2024 and resigned from the Senate in August 2024. This was his SECOND federal corruption trial - he was previously tried in 2017 on charges of accepting gifts from Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen in exchange for political favors; that trial ended in a hung jury.
