Salvador Allende was the first Marxist to be elected president of a Latin American country in a free election. He was overthrown on September 11, 1973 in a CIA-backed military coup led by Augusto Pinochet. Allende died during the coup, either by suicide or murder, as the military bombed the presidential palace. His death ushered in 17 years of brutal dictatorship.
