Director of Unit 731, Imperial Japanese Army
Commander of Biological Warfare Program Who Conducted Human Experiments
Lieutenant General Shiro Ishii commanded Unit 731, the Japanese Imperial Army's covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit in Manchuria during World War II. Under his direction, Unit 731 conducted lethal experiments on thousands of human subjects, including live vivisection without anesthesia, plague and cholera weapon testing on Chinese civilians, and frostbite experiments. An estimated 3,000-12,000 prisoners died in the facility. He was granted immunity by the United States in exchange for biological warfare data.
