President and CEO of PhRMA
Head of the pharmaceutical industry lobbying organization that spends over $350 million annually to block prescription drug price controls in the United States
Stephen J. Ubl (born circa 1970) has served as President and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) since 2015, leading the most powerful and best-funded lobbying organization in American healthcare. Under his leadership, PhRMA has spent over $350 million annually on lobbying, campaign contributions, and advocacy to prevent Medicare from negotiating drug prices, block drug importation from Canada, and extend patent monopolies. PhRMA member companies include Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, Merck, AbbVie, and virtually every major pharmaceutical manufacturer. Before joining PhRMA, Ubl served as president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), another powerful industry lobbying group representing medical device manufacturers. His career has been entirely dedicated to advancing the commercial interests of healthcare corporations in Washington, making him one of the most influential figures in maintaining the American pharmaceutical pricing system that charges Americans 2-3 times more than any other developed nation for the same medications.
