Former U.S. Senator (R-AK)
Longest-serving Republican senator convicted of failing to report $250,000 in gifts including home renovations from oil field services company VECO
Theodore Fulton Stevens served as a U.S. Senator from Alaska from 1968 to 2009, making him the longest-serving Republican senator in history at the time. In July 2008, Stevens was indicted on seven counts of making false statements on his Senate financial disclosure forms for failing to report approximately $250,000 in gifts and home renovations from VECO Corporation, an oil field services company, and its CEO Bill Allen. VECO renovated Stevens's Girdwood, Alaska home, doubling its size, while Allen simultaneously sought Stevens's help with legislation benefiting VECO. Stevens was convicted on all seven counts on October 27, 2008, just days before his reelection bid, which he narrowly lost. However, in April 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder moved to dismiss all charges after discovering that prosecutors had withheld exculpatory evidence from the defense, a serious Brady violation. The DOJ conducted an internal investigation and found systematic prosecutorial misconduct.
