Alleged Chief Architect of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide
Colonel Theoneste Bagosora was a senior Rwandan military officer who the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda identified as the chief organizer and director of the 1994 genocide that killed approximately 800,000-1,000,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu. As Director of Cabinet in the Ministry of Defence, Bagosora exercised de facto control over the military and Interahamwe militia during the critical first days of the genocide. He was convicted in 2008 of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, and sentenced to life imprisonment (later reduced to 35 years on appeal).
