Former Minneapolis Police Officer
Officer involved in George Floyd's murder
Thomas Lane was a rookie Minneapolis police officer involved in the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Lane held Floyd's legs during the restraint while Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck. Lane had suggested rolling Floyd onto his side twice but did not physically intervene. He was convicted on federal civil rights charges and pleaded guilty to state aiding and abetting manslaughter.
FAILURE TO INTERVENE: Lane held George Floyd's legs during the restraint. He twice asked Chauvin if they should roll Floyd on his side, but when Chauvin refused, Lane did not take further action to protect Floyd's life.
ROOKIE TRAINING: Lane was on only his fourth day as a fully licensed officer. His deference to training officer Chauvin highlighted systemic failures in police culture where junior officers feel unable to challenge lethal force decisions.
STATE PLEA: In May 2022, Lane pleaded guilty to a state charge of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison.
FEDERAL CONVICTION: In February 2022, Lane was found guilty by a federal jury of depriving Floyd of his civil rights. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in federal prison.
PRIOR CAREER: Before becoming a police officer, Lane worked at a juvenile detention center and held a degree in criminology. He joined the MPD as a cadet before being hired as an officer.
