Overview

George Hunter White (1911-1975) was a senior agent of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) who served as the CIA's primary field operative for Operation Midnight Climax, one of the most disturbing subprojects of the MKUltra mind control program. Between 1955 and 1965, White operated clandestine safe houses in San Francisco and New York City that functioned as CIA-funded brothels where unwitting American citizens were dosed with LSD and other drugs while government agents observed through one-way mirrors. White had joined the FBN in 1934 and developed a reputation as an aggressive, hard-drinking agent with a talent for undercover work. During World War II, he worked with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) testing truth serums on prisoners and enemy agents, which brought him to the attention of CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb. When MKUltra launched in 1953, Gottlieb recruited White to create operational environments where LSD could be tested on unwitting subjects in real-world settings. The Operation Midnight Climax safe houses were furnished and decorated to attract targets. Prostitutes, paid by the CIA, would lure men to the safe houses, where their drinks were secretly dosed with LSD. White and other agents watched through one-way mirrors, taking notes on the subjects' reactions. The apartments were equipped with surveillance recording equipment. White ran these operations with little oversight and considerable personal excess, reportedly drinking heavily during surveillance sessions. In his retirement diary, White wrote what became one of the most quoted lines in CIA history: "I toiled wholeheartedly in the vineyards because it was fun, fun, fun. Where else could a red-blooded American boy lie, kill, cheat, steal, rape, and pillage with the sanction and blessing of the All-Highest?" White was never prosecuted for any of his activities. He died in 1975, just before the Church Committee hearings exposed MKUltra.
