Coronavirus Researcher
Gain of Function Pioneer, UNC Virologist, COVID Origins Figure
Ralph Baric is a professor of epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and one of the world's leading coronavirus researchers. He pioneered techniques for manipulating coronaviruses and collaborated with Wuhan Institute of Virology on chimeric virus research. His 2015 paper with Shi Zhengli demonstrated creating chimeric coronaviruses that could infect human cells. While his research has contributed to pandemic preparedness and therapeutics development, it has also raised serious questions about the risks of gain of function research and the origins of COVID-19.
2015 CHIMERIC VIRUS: Co-created chimeric coronavirus using bat virus spike protein, demonstrated human cell infection
GAIN OF FUNCTION PIONEER: Developed techniques to enhance viral capabilities that raise biosecurity concerns
WUHAN COLLABORATION: Worked directly with Shi Zhengli and shared techniques with Wuhan lab
MORATORIUM EXCEPTION: Research continued during 2014-2017 gain of function pause under NIH exception
NO-SEE CONTRACT: Special agreement with Moderna allowed early remdesivir access but restricted disclosure
FURIN CLEAVAGE: Questions about whether techniques could have been used to engineer SARS-CoV-2 features
THERAPEUTIC DEVELOPMENT: Also credited with contributing to COVID-19 treatment and vaccine development
DUAL USE CONCERN: Research has both defensive and potential offensive applications
CONGRESSIONAL SCRUTINY: Called to testify about gain of function research and Wuhan connections
SCIENTIFIC DEBATE: Defends research as necessary for pandemic preparedness despite risks
