Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire
Architect and Primary Organizer of the Armenian Genocide
Mehmed Talat Pasha served as Interior Minister (1913-1917) and Grand Vizier (1917-1918) of the Ottoman Empire. As the most powerful member of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) triumvirate, Talat personally ordered and organized the systematic deportation and extermination of the Armenian population in 1915. He signed the deportation orders, directed the Special Organization death squads, oversaw the confiscation of Armenian property, and coordinated the logistics of the death marches into the Syrian desert. Talat was sentenced to death in absentia by Ottoman courts-martial in 1919 and assassinated in Berlin in 1921 by Armenian genocide survivor Soghomon Tehlirian.
